Having the right obstetrician during your pregnancy is extremely important. This is a big moment in your life and you need to know you’re in good hands.
If this is your first pregnancy, you’re possibly feeling overwhelmed. It’s ok to feel this way – many people do. There’s a lot to consider and just because one obstetrician was great for your friend or sister, they may not be right for you.
Start by creating a list of questions to ask your obstetrician on the first appointment to see if you are comfortable with the way they plan to manage your pregnancy.
Firstly, ask who will be delivering your baby. Your doctor should make every effort to deliver your baby and be with you at the birth but no one can predict emergencies that may make your doctor unavailable. If your obstetrician is part of a practice comprising several doctors, ask who will be on call during the week you are due. Ask about their approach and see if you can meet them.
If you have thought about your birth plan, ask if your obstetrician will accommodate your needs. Are you planning for a natural birth with no pain relief or do you want an epidural the second you’re on the bed? Is a caesarean section your preference? Even though birth plans don’t always work out the way you wish, its important to discuss with your obstetrician, your preferences and the possible alternatives that may arise.
