Coping at Christmas

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year but it can also be a difficult time when your dream to start a family is yet to be fulfilled.

If you’re worried about how you might feel this Christmas, Eve Specialist Clinical Nurse Jen Griffiths suggests being prepared with an action plan.

Prepare for any possible feelings of pressure and sadness by talking about it with your husband, partner or a trusted friend and then work out an action plan together.

Your action plan might include:

  • A pre-agreed signal for use at parties and social gatherings, that tells your partner you need to leave.
  • Pre-prepared answers to questions you might get asked about pregnancy and starting your family.
  • Agreement with your husband or partner that it’s okay to say no to social invitations if you don’t feel up to it.
  • Having time as a couple and not feeling guilty about it.
  • Choosing someone you can ‘let steam off’ with if you need. It might be your partner but it might be someone who has been through IVF and can relate.
  • Maybe include plans to spend time with some friends who don’t have children.

Staying focused on optimising your fertility can also help if you’re feeling a little down.

Avoid binge drinking and keep up your healthy eating and exercising. Also put some time aside to just relax and read a book or go for a walk – put yourself first and don’t feel guilty about it.

It’s also a good idea to work out your next steps for the New Year.
