Your Menopause Story

Menopause consists of three primary stages: perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause.

There is no specific timeline or age for experiencing these stages, as the process varies greatly from person to person.

Understanding these stages and what to anticipate can help you recognise and predict which stage you may be going through.

Perimenopause (Late Fertile, Early Perimenopause, Late Perimenopause)

Perimenopause is the transitional phase that lasts four to ten years leading up to your final menstrual period. It typically begins in your 40s, although it can start as early as the mid-30s. This stage marks the onset of hormonal changes, as the cyclical hormones produced by our ovaries, namely estrogen and progesterone, begin to decline. During this time, the ovaries function intermittently due to a decrease in egg supply.

Hormone levels can fluctuate significantly, ranging from normal to very low or very high, which contributes to the diverse symptoms.

Menopause

Menopause is defined as 12 months since your last menstrual cycle and signifies the end of your reproductive years.

It’s a natural biological process that every woman experiences, typically occurring in their late 40s or early 50s. While menopause marks the end of fertility, it also opens a new chapter in life, one that can be embraced with understanding and support.

As you transition from perimenopause to menopause, the significant decline in estrogen levels, leads to a variety of symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood changes, and difficulty sleeping.

Post Menopausal

This phase can also be described as the rest of your life and marks the conclusion of your reproductive years. While your ovaries will still produce low levels of estrogen and progesterone, ovulation and menstruation will stop.

Many symptoms may begin to settle, although some may persist; and this depends on the individual and their own journey. During this time, you might continue to experience the same symptoms that occurred during the perimenopause and menopause stages for several years following your final menstrual cycle.

Fortunately, these symptoms generally lessen over time. However, women in this stage face an increased risk of heart disease and osteoporosis due to the decline in estrogen levels.

While menopause itself is a natural part of aging, the experience can vary greatly from one person to another. Some women may go through menopause with relatively few symptoms and minimal disruption to their daily lives, while others may experience more pronounced and bothersome symptoms.

Symptoms of Menopause

Typical Menopause symptoms include;

– hot flushes

– disrupted sleep

– difficulty concentrating

– a decrease in mental activity

– mental health and emotions changes

– vaginal dryness

– sexual pain

– loss of libido
